Salomon Brand History

François Salomon began his career by crafting saw blades in a modest home workshop. His son Georges continued the family business and made significant strides. After studying engineering in the evenings, Georges built a machine to manufacture ski edges, freeing up time to develop other ski equipment. In the 1950s, Georges introduced two groundbreaking ideas: removable Skade laces and the Le lift system. 

Skiers used fixed leather straps as laces, resulting in twisted legs and fractures. The Skade laces attach to the boot’s toe tip, while the Le lift system allows knots to unbuckle on their own under strong impacts. The leash for skiing still uses this design.

By 1972, Salomon had become the world’s leading ski equipment brand, producing around one million products annually. The brand expanded into snowshoes in 1979 and introduced the influential SX91 ski boots in 1984. Salomon continued to innovate and ventured into manufacturing Alpine skis, snowboards, and hiking boots in the 1990s. 

Georges’ obsession with product innovation led him to acquire TaylorMade, the American golf equipment maker. Adidas acquired Salomon in 1997, and in 2005 it was sold to Chinese sportswear company Amer Sports when Adidas left the ski apparel and equipment industry.

Salomon’s Transition to the Fashion Industry

Prior to 2015, Salomon was never associated with fashion. Its brightly colored lines were solely intended to increase visibility while hiking. However, it all changed when a customer walked into The Broken Arm, an influential Parisian streetwear boutique, inquiring about the Salomon Snowcross shoes – which look like wading shoes but are designed for running in the snow, not walking in the street. 

This led to Salomon and The Broken Arm collaborating, using the same core values as the Snowcross but featuring a newer outsole with gray, green, and orange colorways.

According to Salomon’s global brand expert, Alex van Oostrum, “It was a game-changing moment, but it was all very natural. It’s about them buying the brand’s heritage and the shoe’s technical aspects.” This collaboration sparked a series of unique partnerships, with German menswear designer Boris Bidjan Saberi creating a black and white redesign of the iconic Speedcross 3 trail running shoe in early 2016.

Later that year, Jean-Philippe Lalonde, formerly of Veilance, joined Salomon to establish a new sports style division, combining street style with product performance. The division started with three employees and a whiteboard but has since grown to 12 people. 

Although it represents a small portion of Salomon’s product line, the Sport Style division has had the largest impact on brand awareness. It is the fastest-growing department in the company.

Jean-Philippe’s innovation program kept the original shoe design but added new features and bold colors. In 2018, Salomon showcased at Men’s Fashion Week in Paris, marking a significant milestone. The brand has continued collaborating with fashion brands, such as Comme des Garçons, adapting the RX Slide 3.0 twin into a product called “la Mary Jane.”

According to Fabian Gorsler, sportswear editor at Berlin-based Highsnobiety, there has been a growing interest in sneakers that are both functional and technical. 

Gorsler believes that this trend is here to stay and that increasing demand for products truly promotes efficiency, particularly in the post-COVID era. The crucial aspect of all Salomon products is that they deliver what they promise, an they all meet customers’ needs.

Lesson 2

Salomon’s sportstyle sneakers are unique and appealing because they are made with the same commitment to performance as the rest of the lineup. According to Alex, most of the collaborations are based on existing core designs. For instance, Salomon recently collaborated with Japanese minimalist Fumito Ganryu street fashion to create a white version of the classic Ultra trail running shoe. 

Alex explained that the brand never deviates too far from its core product technology. He added that even in the city, people desire a functional design that provides protection and comfort. Therefore, it is important to maintain uniqueness and stay true to the brand’s core values.

Lesson 3

Collaborate smartly. Alex explains that many brands want to collaborate with Salomon, but the company is selective in choosing its partners. However, this does not mean that Salomon always plays it safe, as evidenced by its collaboration with London-based Palace Skateboards. 

Alex notes that the two brands have vastly different customer bases, with Palace’s being younger and streetwear-focused, while Salomon’s is older and outdoor-focused. Despite this, the collaboration felt right and allowed Salomon to expand its customer base. Jean-Philippe adds that the collaboration has also influenced Salomon’s design style, such as the use of reflective surfaces inspired by Japanese streetwear brand Wander in their first collaboration.

Lesson 4

Provide constructive feedback to the brand. At Salomon’s headquarters in Annecy, there is a quote from Georges Salomon on the reception desk that reads: “I am intrigued by what I will do tomorrow.” As part of their ongoing efforts to find answers, the teams in Annecy have developed prototypes for trail running vests and Nordic ski poles that have been included in the Sportstyle division.

Alex notes that the concept of innovating in street style is viable and effective because the brand always stays relevant by constantly innovating.

Lesson 5

Collaborating with archives. Salomon is reviving its old designs for a new market, as seen with the recent release of the 2001 XA-Pro in partnership with Organiclab.zip, an Instagram account that specializes in vintage outdoor wear. The brand is also re-releasing three classic models as part of its latest collaboration with The Broken Arm. 

It plans to release more classic designs next year as Salomon marks 30 years since it first produced the shoe, originally for the 1,000 km Raid Gauloises ultra marathon. Alex emphasizes the importance of the brand’s heritage and how it attracts people, saying that “looking ahead means looking back” for Salomon.
