How Much Does a Box of Shoes Weigh?

According to the shoe box industry, the average weight for a box of shoes is 0.32 lbs. However, these numbers vary considerably.

According to a 1998 survey conducted by the shoe industry, the average weight of a shoe box was found to be 0.18 lbs.

Shoe boxes are usually made out of cardboard, which makes them pretty light. The heavier materials used in making all other shoe boxes are used for durability purposes rather than packaging purposes. This lighter box is better suited for distribution purposes, as it allows retailers to carry less at any one time than if they were using heavier material.

A box of shoes typically weighs between 10 and 20 ounces.

Here is the average weight of a box of women’s shoes:

Size 4 – 5 Weight: 13 ounces

Size 6 – 8 Weight: 16.4 ounces

Size 9 – 10 Weight: 18.6 ounces

Size 11 – 12 Weight: 21.1 ounces

Size 13+ Weight: 23.2 ounces

How to Accurately Measure the Weight of a Shoe Box?

If you don’t have a scale or a ruler handy, use this method to determine the weight of your empty shoe box.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A tape measure.
  • A pair of shoes to wear while you measure your own stuff…and maybe someone else’s too…

Step 1

Holding the tape measure out in front of you, place one end at the very top of your heel and the other at the very bottom of your heel. Write down your heel-length measurement.

Step 2

Holding the tape measure out in front of you, place one end at the very top of your instep and the other at the very bottom of your instep. Write down your instep-length measurement.

Step 3

Place a piece of paper on the floor and walk along it, pressing down with one heel first and then with the other foot. Make sure you press hard so that your toes leave an imprint on the paper. Place a ruler next to each imprint and mark where they intersect with another line (because width varies among different shoe sizes, we’re going to measure length instead). Write down your step-length measurement.

Step 4

Place another piece of paper on the floor and walk along it, pressing down with your toes first and then with your heel. Make sure you press hard so that your paper imprints are near the same length as in Step 3. Place a ruler next to each imprint and mark where they intersect with another line (because width varies among different shoe sizes, we’re going to measure length instead). Write down the paper-length measurement.

Step 5

Next, grab an empty shoe box, one that’s at least 10 centimeters wide (4 inches) and about 5 centimeters or 2 inches high. This is important because different brands of shoes vary in size by brand.

Weight of Shoes

Weight varies depending on the shoe type. For example, running shoes are generally lighter than heavy duty boots or hiking shoes.

  • Sneakers – about 12 ounces
  • Boots – up to 24 ounces
  • Sandals – about 8 ounces
  • Heels – up to 2 pounds
  • Race Shoes – up to 7 ounces
  • Hiking Shoes – 12 ounces

Children’s shoes are usually lighter than adult shoes. For example, a pair of baby sneakers weighs 2-3 pounds. A pair of children’s hiking boots weighs 4-6 pounds.

Weight affects the way you walk. People generally prefer light shoes because they cause less fatigue because your foot doesn’t have to work as hard to support the weight.

A pair of trainers weighs between 0.8 to 1.75 pounds or 0.35 to 0.75 kilograms approximately. Sandals weigh between 0.77 and 0.88 pounds or around 0.35 to 0.42 kilograms respectively. A pair of vans and casual shoes weigh about 1 and a half pounds or around 0.75 kilogrammes. Steel-toed boots weigh approximately 4 and a half pounds or around 2 and a half kilograms.

How to Find Approximate Weight of Your Footwear?

Step 1

First, you’ll need to measure your own shoes. If you don’t have a scale or ruler at hand, check out our shoe size conversion chart below for how much each shoe size in ounces in the US and UK.

Step 2

Measure the insole in millimeters (mm) with a ruler or calipers (see image at right). You’ll need the length, width and thickness (or height) to accurately measure your insoles. Multiply the length by the width to get the total surface area (in mm). Divide by 10,000 to convert it to centimeters.

Step 3

Now you need a measuring device. If you have a nice pair of calipers, lucky you! If not, a ruler will usually do the trick. Measure your foot from toe to heel and then from that first measurement to your longest toe. Multiply those two numbers together and that is your foot surface area in cm2. Divide by 100 and you’ll have your foot surface area in m2. Multiply that number by your thickness (also in mm) to get the volume.

What is The Usual Dimension of A Shoe Box?

Every person knows what a shoe box is, but how much do you know about the size of a standard shoe box? This article will help you understand the dimensions of a standard shoe box.

To begin with, a standard size shoe box is around 9 1/2 inches wide and 8 inches tall. More interestingly though, it can range from an actual height of 7 1/4 inches to just over 9 3/4 inches tall.

The reason for the variation in the height is that the shoe box industry standard is to make them slightly shorter than standard books. The reasoning behind this is to allow for easier access to the contents within.

The width of these boxes also varies, however, they are typically between 6 3/4 and 7 inches wide. Additionally, there are different shoe box thicknesses, with the industry standard being about 0.093 inches thick. However, there are variations within this number ranging from 0.049 inches to 0.1 inches thick.

The reason for the box thickness variation is that boxes are considered to be disposable. To keep the cost low, they are not designed to be strong. Another factor in determining the shoe box thickness is simply how much material it takes to hold the contents of a box. While thicker material would work better, it would also inflate the cost of producing each shoe box.

As you can see, care should be taken when buying shoes, as it might be difficult to fit your shoes into a smaller shoe box than advertised on its exterior. I hope this article has helped you understand more about standard shoe boxes!
