The Way To Do It
These giant Nike shoe boxes are a great way to store your sneakers and keep them out of sight when not being worn. They were designed to fit inside of a closet giving you plenty of room for everything else too! When guests come over, simply pull one out and let them know that they can put their shoes in it if they need to keep them hidden. You can also use these to store any other shoes too, so it’s not limited to just sneakers.
Step 1: Gather all of your materials
5 boxes from large Nike box sets (you can also use Heelys, Sketchers or Jordans). 1 2′ by 4′ sheet of paintable wallpaper ($7 at Home Depot), $10 worth of contact paper (Home Depot) – this will depend on how much of the shoe you want to cover. We lined approximately 1/3 of each box with contact paper so the only thing visible were the sides. You could always line the entire shoe as well.
You will need a pair of Nike sneakers along with one paper towel roll, scissors, tape measure and the box (if it is not the correct size). You can use an old box, or you can buy one for a dollar or two at Wal-Mart. I saved mine from a pair of shoes we previously bought and never used!
Step 2: Measure the box height and width
You will have to measure the height and width of your box. Measure your shoe while it is sitting on its bottom inside of the box. It may be best to use the paper towel roll at this time to make sure that the height is fairly accurate.
We had HomeDepot cut our 2′ by 4′ sheet of wallpaper in half to make it easier to work with. Measure the height and then the width of each box using a tape measure. Write this down for each box so you’ll have the measurements later on.
Step 3: Cut your box lengthwise
Cut out the side and bottom sections of the shoe box. Be sure to include all of the tabs in the corners and add them to the front of your box. Draw on a pattern piece around the side of your shoe box that matches up with your pattern piece at the top of your box.
Be very careful when doing this, use some elbow grease but not too much! You don’t want your box opening up as you make your cut! By making it a half inch shorter, it will give you a little more room once your shoe is in the box.
Use pieces of tape to hold it together if necessary. I only used one piece for each edge.
